15. May 2009 — Crossing Border into Kazakhstan

Woke up at around 5am to hear the rain outside and I mentally prepared myself for another day of driving in the rain. Luckily by the time I got up at 7:30am it had stopped raining. I loaded up the bike and was ready to hit the road, when the woman at reception offered I could have breakfast for free. Of course didn’t say no to that. Headed off after breaky for the short drive to the border….

16. May 2009 — Help in Atyrau

Kind of an early start to the next town / village. Thing to mention: a) the small towns have no paved roads so all just dirt roads leading of the main road. With the recent rain its a mud fest, b) no matter how dusty / muddy you see women on the side of the road all dressed up - skirt, tights and high heels. Mad…..

17. May 2009 — Roadside repair and help

Had a slow start today - felt the beers from last night. So after breaky sat in the hotel bar which had wi-fi and updated my journal. Have to come up with a better way. At the moment I most of the time write it by hand and then type it, which is double the work. However I often feel more comfortable to sit in a cafe with a notebook instead of presenting myself as the yuppie westerner with a laptop…

20. May 2009 — Helped out again

Sleeping in back of a truck tonight. How did I get there you might ask. Well let me explain. It had rained all night and I mean downpour. After breaky it had stop but I knew it would not be for long. Right I was, just outside of Aktobe it started raining again…

21. May 2009 — Astana but only short pit stop

Not very comfortable night and way to short. Just got 2 hours of sleep before we set off again. Stopped for breakfast which I actually wanted to pay but Juergen was quicker. The other truck driver was not really please about this and after a short argument he headed off. I think he was thinking I was getting a free ride there after last nights petrol incident. I think I overstayed my welcome a bit…

22. May 2009 — Met first bike travelers

Little mess at hotel. I was out of the room by 7:30 am and then hung around until breaky could be had at 8 am. Or so I thought. I had understood that in the half day rate the breaky was not included but that I could just pay for it in the morning. Turned not out to be the case. would have to pay the full day rate to get breaky. Slightly pissed off at inflexibility, but their loss. Could have made some extra money…

24. May 2009 — Nomads MCC Almaty

Checked out at 9am and then sat in cafe for 2 hours taking it easy. Thought no sense calling anybody before 11am or so, because its Sunday after all. Tried to call Derrek, but still no luck getting thru. Tried ringing Vitaly, whose number I got from Artem & Mary.

25. May 2009 — Mad ride thru Almaty at night

Woke up at noon and I think Pasha and Vlad wanted to get on the road so went to get something to eat at a cantine. After saying goodbye to the two myself and Andre spend a few hours talking with the heavy use of translating program. I then tried to fix the Loobman chain oiler but have to see if it will work properly…

28. May 2009 — Bad roads, speeding ticket

I feel violated and not in a good way. 380 miles of hellish road. The longest stretch of the most atrocious road so far in KZ. Yes there were stretches of 20 - 30 or even 60 miles but this was 380 miles of constant bone crushing stuff - pot holes, ruts and the worst 5 - 6 meters apart kind of gullies across the road. Sorry for bitching but everything in my body hurts. My hands are numb and the bike took a pretty severe pounding as well…
