Altai Region with Barnaul bikers
Got woken at 4am by rain drops in my face. Literally jumpt out of my sleeping bag trying to get my stuff into the dry. Two minutes later it was over. So back to sleep…
My plan was to drive into Barnaul, search for a biker and him for a good place to stay and a bike mechanic to do an oil change and put my knobbly tires on. So good plan I thought. Except that I went up the main street twice - no biker. I pulled in for a smoke. Did not have my helmet off for two minutes when just out of the next side street I see two guys on sports bikes pull into the main street and off they were. Damn.
Still sitting there staring after them Vova and Jenya pull up beside me on a Kawasaki chopper. Quick exchange - name, where from etc. Then Vova asks if I want to join them going to Gorno-Altaiysk. I tried to figure out what was happening there, but wanted to go there anyway so said OK. 100 meters behind where I had stopped was actually a biker bar. Dumb luck. So waited there for Vova and Jenya to get their camping stuff. We set off on the 150 mile ride. On the way Vova explained that a friend had bought a Suzuki Hayabusa and to celebrate they where heading away for the weekend.
By the time we arrived at the camp ground it was 6:30 pm. Had to go over this wonky wooden suspension bridge. Big enough for a car but it was mad steep and shaped like an “M”. I had expected tents but it was actually wood cabins with 6 - 7 sport bikes in front of them (Yamaha R1, Honda CBR 600 and Fireblade etc.) So big hello and had to tell about my trip. So first shot of Vodka before even unpacking bike. Some shashlik and salad. Second shot. Talked some more. Later on we went to the “disco”. Large open-air stage, dance music and some striptease acts. Didn’t stay too long actually - I think. Came back to the camp and somebody fired up the BBQ again. Not sure when I got to bed.
