Great time in Khuzir

Let of dew in the early hours so had to wait for the sun to dry my sleeping bag. Set off and was very careful this time. Discovered the puddle beside the rut I got stuck in for the first time was actually way firmer ground and water only a couple of inches deep.

So went back the 10 miles to the good dirt road and then headed back towards Irkutsk to find the proper road to Olkhon Island. I just didn’t want to take my chances on any of the connecting roads. On the map they might be shown as secondary roads but they are bad forest roads really. The main road was actually good until about 25 miles before the ferry terminal then it turned into dirt track. Pretty tricky because some patches had deep sand. Bike got pretty loose on sand with the front starting to wobble. I had a few close calls. Its strange when you hit sand your first instinct is to go off the throttle even though you normally should increase the power to pull the front straight. Goes totally against your instinct.

Reached the ferry and got approached by Rainer (fellow countryman) who had spotted the Irish license plate. Had a really good chat while we waiting for the ferry which took its bloody time. Rainer is on an Round-the-World trip as well with the Transsip then on to China and the US. Always going east.

Getting on the ferry was pure madness. At some stage I just pulled in front of some cars. Got some bad words from one of the deck hands because I didn’t pull into a space between some minibuses, but to be honest its their job to load the boat properly and they could see me standing there.

img 2817Dirt road sand continued on the island. Arrived in Khuzir and found Nikita’s guest house. Straight away I got talking to people. Met Laurie (Finland) and joined other travelers for BBQ on the beach. After dinner we got some beer and sausages in the store and headed down to the beach. Lots of people there from all over - US, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Russia. Great fun and again a late night - 4am.
