Heading into California

Dave and me set off together and rode until mid day. Then Dave had to turn off for Eugene, Oregon. I continued on for a while until just after the Californian border….

img 3557Was ready to call it a day at 5pm so pulled into a motel to ask what their rate was. On the way in I noticed the bike at the petrol station but was to busy changing lanes. I was standing in the hotel lobby when James from Seattle came in and said that there is a Horizons Unlimited meeting (website for overland bike travelers) happening just south of Eurika. So easy decision. Set off with James.

img 3571Still some 150 miles to go so did some of the Redwoods in the fading light. Not the best thing to be doing because of the higher chance of deer running in front of your bike. Actually saw a herd of elk maybe 30 yards away. By the time we reached Ferndale and going up the mountains the clouds had dropped and that road got dangerous. Quick joined decision to turn around.

I remembered that Dave had told me that you could camp at the fairgrounds in Ferndale. We went there to check it out. Looked good. Since we had not had dinner yet we went back to “downtown” Ferndale. We managed to get something in a pizzeria before the closed. Camped at the fairgrounds with pretty lumpy ground.
