Into Mongolia
Broke camp and headed for the border around 9:30 am. We just drove past all the cars and trucks to stop right at the gate. Only stood there for a few minutes when the gate was opened and we were let thru….
The woman for the customs control was actually very helpful. She showed us what to write were and what we needed. Realized that having crossed in and out of Russia already a couple of times was an advantage. I knew exactly what to fill out and what was needed.
The Mongolian side was a more laborious process. Had to go here and there and back to the first counter, make photocopies etc. But after 2.5 hours all three of us including bikes were in Mongolia.
Scenery was completely different right after the border. Rolling hills and steppe. We drove for a bit and then stopped for lunch. We didn’t have breaky so by now I was hungry. So had the same we had for dinner.
Still had 150 miles to Ulaan Baatar so we tried to cover some miles. None of us had changed money with the money changers at the border. We had enough petrol to get us to UB (=Ulaan Baatar). But we couldn’t buy any food and on the road there were some toll stations. Kind of interesting trying to explain the guy that you have no Mongolian money. Most of the time they just waved us thru.
We tried to find an ATM at a bank in Darkhan but a lot of times the ATMs are inside the bank so if the bank is closed because its a Sunday you are out of luck. Guess what day it was today :-(
So with the last petrol and no money we pulled into UB. Traffic was mental and the main road thru town is pretty long. We finaly found an ATM and while standing in front of the bank a German started talking to us. He said that there were a couple of bikers and some other Germans in a pub just down the road. We went there to meet Tony & Sigi. They were staying at the Oasis guest house as well and they let me ring Sybille to get the info where we could stay and for them to expect us.
Since it was too late to get food at the Oasis. The three of us decided to have dinner at the pub and then make our way to the Oasis.
The Oasis guest house is run by Sibylle & Rene and has 6 gers (jurts) in the garden, a few rooms and a cafe. Olivier, Sylvie and myself moved into one ger and then went into the cafe for a few beers.
