Leaving Russia

So today I will be leaving Russia with mixed feelings I have to say. The people I met were amazing, friendly and helpful. One regret I have is that I didn’t put more effort into learning the language…

img 3203Now looking forward to seeing Korea (briefly) and Japan. I’m also looking forward to the US and spending some time in a country where I can read signs, menus and understand people effortlessly. In the end traveling by myself and were everything is a struggle got to me a little bit from time to time.

This morning I woke up early, packed the bike and set off. You will not believe this but the sun came out at least for a brief moment. First time in 5 days. Left a 9:15am.

img 3211Did my photo op at the Vlad sign and 20 miles down the road turned off to go to Zarubino. Road immediately got worse. Again construction sites interspersed with brand new tarmac. The construction sites were brutal. Crater like pot holes which you could not avoid.

I made it to Zarubino at 1pm. Thought this would be a pretty big town but no its a small village with a ferry port. So drove up to what looked like the entrance to the port. Actually just wanted to check if I was in the right place. But once I got started I was suddenly inside the port. I had to ask around a bit to find the right building and the person to do the customs proceedings.

img 3213I got my bill of lading and had to pay $ 150. The lady said this was for the document. I hope its for shipping the bike as well. Thats the thing in Russia you ask 5 people and they will give you 5 different answers and they are all wrong. A lot depends on where and who you ask. Example 1: ferry office told me it would be 600 rubles to enter the port - I actually paid 250. Example 2: customs declaration has to be filled out differently every time. One time the bike is on “temporary admission” next time its “import”. So anyway got the bike on the ferry, got myself on there. But as always I’m hopelessly unprepared for a ferry ride. I wanted to get some cigarettes, water and food. Didn’t happen. But will survive this as well. Tomorrow - culture shock - South Korea.
