Leaving UB for real

So finally leaving UB today. Yes really really really. Woke up early because its so bright outside by 7am that I can’t sleep. Had a few smokes and cups of tea before real breaky…

Packed the bike, had a shower and paid the bill. All pretty relaxed. Drive thru UB took quiet long. Mad traffic. Warm weather. So I took out the Goretex liner which made sitting in traffic bearable.

img 2928First 40 miles were good paved road and then the piste started. Crazy stuff, this was the main route going west, north-west and south-west. There is no single track to follow. Everybody just drives were he thinks its the best. So basically 300 m wide with different tracks over the steppe. About 70 miles out of UB I got to a junction with an asphalt road, pretty sure that was the route I had to take to Khovsgol Nuur (lake in the north-west). The paved road of course did not last long. Then track again. Noticed that it was going too far to the north. So changed to other track leading in more westerly direction. I think the map I have is not great. The GPS maps are useless. So navigation is a real pain in the arse. There are tracks leading in all directions, so in the end I used the GPS to show the compass direction I was going and the direction to the next town I had to hit.

Until now off-road riding is great fun. Tracks are nicely compacted. At around 5:30pm I could see lightning and rain clouds in the valley in front of me. Only a question of time before I would get wet. Without the liner in my suit it would have been also cold. I started to look for a camp spot and found a gully where I was a little out of sight and protected from the wind. First few drops when I stopped the bike. Pitched the tent and it started to rain more heavily.

Also discovered another broken spoke. Seriously getting sick of this. Don’t know what to do. I know one guy in UB has a complete rear wheel for an XT. I think I might ask him what he wants for it when I’m back. But then I will need to send the old wheel back to Germany or Ireland which could be very expensive. Sigh, just a real pain in the arse.
