More Rain in Sochi

Woke up and still raining buckets. Did not look like it would clear up either. So went for breakfast and hung around until 10:30 to see if there would be any improvement in the weather. Nada, still raining buckets. I normally don’t shy away from a bit of rain, but this was the stuff that would have soaked me to the bone in 30min. So made the decision to stay an extra night…

Went downstairs to let reception know and then to the parking lot next door were the bike was parked. Tried to make it clear to the guy there that the bike was staying until tomorrow. Ok, should be fine.

Back in my room I realized that I forgot to get my laptop and the Russian road atlas from the bike so wrote a little note with my name and room number for the guy at the parking lot so that if there was a problem he would get in touch with me. After retrieving my stuff I gave the note to the attendant and in his little booth were Victor & Dmitri. I was told to join them and with a very little English and a lot of gesturing I explained what I was doing. Victor told me that they had to celebrate that Russia beat Canada in ice hockey to retain the world championship title. Dmitri went off to the shop and came back with a bottle of vodka and some bread, cheese and ham. So there I was sitting in this tiny booth, watching the rain outside and drinking vodka. Excellent.

Killed the half liter bottle between the four of us fairly quickly. It got later and later. Second bottle was gotten. By about 3pm the weather had actually cleared up and the sun broke thru sporadically. Managed to kill 3/4 of the second bottle and Victor & Dmitri wanted to bring me to this “German” place. So after dumping my stuff in my room we set off. Hmm I’m never sure about those fake german places abroad. Waitresses in Dirndl and stupid german folk music.

Anyway on the way there Victor & Dmitri had somehow talked this girl Helen into joining us. It was pretty funny the four of us talking with hands and feet. We had a couple of beers and said goodbye to Helen who was going back to Moscow. Us guys stayed a little longer and then back to the hotel. 9pm and I’m pretty bollocksed. Still somehow managed to wash some of my clothes in the sink.
