North into Russia
The look out the window was a shock - rain again. Grrr getting sick of this. So down for breaky and a smoke. Downpour again. Went back too my room and got the maps loaded onto my GPS. Rain died down, so happier now. On check out got my visa registered. They didn’t stamp the migration card but I got a copy of the registration. Hope that is enough…
So finally set off, still a slight drissle and traffic was mental until I got across the river. I’m slowly improving on my reading cyrillic. At least I’m able to make sense of the street signs so I’m not heading in the wrong direction. The drive along the coast was excellent. I have to say the roads are as bad as in Turkey but Russians are way less crazy drivers. Maybe it has to do with the fact that there is so much police on the roads. I would say speed checks every 15 miles and traffic checks every 40 miles - the road block kind. Stayed out of trouble - only at the first check point I wasn’t sure and stopped when the guy realized that I wasn’t a Russian he just waived me on.
Very slow progress along the coast road, then got on to M4 which was better - not really a motorway but better road condition and overtaking lanes at least on the uphills. I’m actually driving a pretty big detour to avoid the problem regions of Chechnya and others in the Caucasus. So heading north then east to Volgograd and south to cross into Kazakhstan. Just thinking about it now. I might head further north-east to Samara to go into Kazakhstan from there. Will study the maps later tonight.
The further north I got the sceneries changed to flat lands and farm land. So not good for camping as its also pretty densely populated. So ended up in a Motel kind of place even though the room looks more like they normally rent it out by the hour. Leopard skin bed covers. Hmmm? But really have to start camping more often to save money. By myself I’m just not really comfortable to sleep in a spot that is easily spotted from the road. We will see. I’m planning a big push tomorrow.
