Roadside repair

Got up early did, the usual bike maintenance and then got on my way. Oiling the chain was pretty pointless because on the next 10 miles I had to cross two rivers. Stopped at a shop in Tariat to buy water and a few things…

img 3067The drive from the lake to Tsetserleg was uneventful. In Tsetserleg stopped at the side of the road to look for the way to the Fairfield Cafe. When a Russian bike stopped beside me I thought “oh here we go again. More questions.” Then I noticed the motorcycle clothes and helmets. No they were not locals. It was Rolf and his wife from Switzerland. They had bought the bikes in UB and now were touring around Mongolia. We tried the Fairfield Cafe but they were closed so we went to the hotel next door. We had something to drink and chatted about our travels. After the usual photos we said our goodbyes.

img 3075At the petrol station the guy tried to rip me off. Not by much but on principle I protested. He filled up and the pump showed 7700 Tögrög and then when he put the nozzle back it switched to 11000 and exactly 10 liters. Argued with him and handed over 8000. He protested but a new customer pulled up and he waived me on under protest.

Now the not so fun bit started. About 40 miles before Harhorin I saw two cars beside the road, but they did not look like they needed help. Went by when I head one guy whistle, I looked, he whistled again so I swerved around and pulled up beside him. I thought they needed help after all. I stopped the bike when I noticed the smoke coming from MY bike. Looked down and saw oil everywhere - my right trousers, oil cooler and engine. I thought, that is it. Major engine problem - head gasket.

Climbed off and it looked like a mess. A third car pulled up who belonged to the other guys. It was Bold who spoke English. He told me they would help me. So I took of the seat, the tank and then started to clean the oil at least a little bit. Bold, Bati and Puujel helped so when I started the engine we could see that it was a welded seam on the oil tank where the oil leaked from. While driving it had just blown all over.

Bati had some stuff to stop the leakage. Which we put on and while it hardened I continued to clean the oil as good as I could. During all this we spotted a flat on Bold’s car so changed that as well and used my compressor to put more air in.

I asked them were they were going and they were heading to the same town and I asked if they minded if I would put up camp with them. So we continued on and after a little drive we stopped at a restaurant for something to eat. Didn’t realized how hungry I was.

After dinner we set off and something was not right with the bike. Up too certain revs it was running fine. But everything above that the bike studdered and actually cut out. Sounded like the second carb was not getting fuel. So nursed the bike to Harhorin where we stayed at ger camp.

I just put my tent up. The bike would have to wait until tomorrow morning.
