Taste of Siberian Roads
Just had a tea at the hotel cafe and set off. Headed into Krasnoyarsk to find ATM. Major hassle, but in the end was successful. So back on the main road to Kansk…
Stopped at bus stop when Kamaz (Russian build truck) stopped. Driver got out and he spoke a few words of German (again served in East Germany as a soldier). He said he had a friend who spoke German. The friend was Vasily who was the mayor of the village Savirovka. He actually invited me to stay in the village. Had I known how bad the road would be it might have been a good idea. We spoke for a little while and then I continued on my way.
Got thru Kansk and then I got my taste of Siberian roads. Construction site for 200 km, which meant a mix of normal tarmac, horrendous broken tarmac with massive pot holes and just plain dirt trick with mud and fist sized stones. On one of those mud stretches I saw two bike head lights coming towards me. At first I thought police bikes. But as they came closer I saw that it was two Honda Goldwings. They stopped, I stopped, had to signal to wait because I had my earplugs with music on. When I looked at the license plate I said we could switch to German. The two were Klaus & Helmut (guys in their 50s I would guess, maybe I’m flattering them) from Nuernberg. They were on their way back from Lake Baikal. Germany - Irkutsk - Germany in 6 weeks with only 30 day Russian visa is pretty impressive - a lot of riding. They gave me a phone number of Peter in Irkutsk (Bike Club).
Got pretty late by the time I got to the motel. Good and cheep again. Bike parked in work shed.
