Tiring day across the steppe
Rained all night. Did not sleep much because I woke up a lot because of the wind and rain. Luckily it stopped raining this morning so at least I didn’t have to pack up in the rain and the tent was mostly dry….
Set of on this track which turned into a bigger, easier to follow piste after Dzaamar. It rained on and off during the day which made driving pretty tricky. Especially where it was muddy. My tires (TKC80) are not really that great in mud. They seam to clog up quickly and then they behave like slicks. Had a few close calls where I nearly lost it. Didn’t stop that much today but progress is so slow. 7.5 hours for 150 miles. From Bulgan there is a huge construction site, ~ 30 miles so far and there are just tracks running along, where they are building the new road.
Camping in this broad valley not far from the road. On the other side of the valley are 3 - 4 gers with cows, horses and goats grassing in front of them. Did some bike maintenance (tighten chain, oiled it). After putting my tent up I had a visitor. A Mongol on a horse, rifle flung across the shoulders. Communicated with sign language. Asked were his ger was etc. Offered him a cigarette and took a picture.
Absolutely knackered, driving on those tracks is hard work. Standing up while driving and fully concentrating takes it out of you. Have to say though that the countryside in Mongolia is stunning. Rolling hills, green, wide open space and no fences. Live stock just roaming free.
